Slave Trade in 1807 Essay - 1699 Words

In order to ascertain how significant beliefs and ideologies were in contributing to the abolition of the slave trade in 1807, and the eventual abolition of slavery in 1833, this assignment will consider moral, political, economic and religious factors which culminated into these two distinct reforms. It will explore the influence of Enlightenment; the impact of non-conformists; the role of individuals and resistance from slaves themselves. William Wilberforce, an evangelical member of parliament featured prominently in the DVD, his work towards the gradual emancipation was significant, however the interview does point out that the programme omits profound individuals such as Thomas Clarkson, who was a central leader of the anti-slavery movement.(DVD 2) An anti-slavery sentiment had developed and sects emerged from Evangelicalism. Despite disagreements on certain doctrinal topics, there was a general consensus between the sects that all men were equal before God, equal in sin and their potential for redemption. This was particularly significant within the anti-slavery movement as it highlighted slavery as problematic and obstructive towards Christian morals. Thank Me Later by Drake free essay sample

After collecting a buzz second to none, Toronto-born rapper Drake has finally released his wildly anticipated debut album, Thank Me Later. From being an actor on Degrassi, a television show aimed at teenagers, to nearing the apex of hip-hop, it’s been a lightning-fast, riveting trip for this rap rookie. Since February 2009, when he released the mixtape So Far Gone, Drake has went into a sprint of fame, releasing music and becoming the talk of hip-hop fans around the world. After nearly a year and a half of gathering hype, Thank Me Later is the Young Money Entertainment artists’ formal introduction to the mainstream. The first track, â€Å"Fireworks,† featuring Alicia Keys, sets the tempo for the multi-faceted album. In between repetitions of Keys’ beautiful choruses, Drake speaks on everything from his rise to fame to the affect his parents’ divorce has had on his outlook of love. The lead single, â€Å"Over,† is led by a powerful chorus of strings, seamlessly transitioning into a fast-paced instrumental backed by bells. We will write a custom essay sample on Thank Me Later by Drake or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Drake seems to summarize his fame with the first words of the song: â€Å"I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year, who are y’all?† Drake teamed up with Young Money boss Lil Wayne to create â€Å"Miss Me,† a massacre of punch lines and outlandish comparisons. The artists contribute one long verse each, viciously attacking the beat. Wayne is far from the only guest on Thank Me Later. Swizz Beatz and T.I. lend their services on the song â€Å"Fancy,† an anthem to the well-kept, independent women around the world. While the soft-singing version of Drake makes appearances on most of the album’s tracks, he releases in full form for â€Å"Shut It Down,† a collaboration with RB sensation The Dream. This song, along with â€Å"Find Your Love† return to Drake’s roots: making pseudo-romantic songs geared more towards the female audience. Perhaps the best guest performance on the CD comes from the legendary Jay-Z on â€Å"Light Up.† The beat features deep drums and a lonely, low synthesizer. Lyrically, the pair discuss the necessary but painful changes fame brings upon stars. Jay exemplifies the subject perfectly with the line â€Å"Sorry momma I promised it wouldn’t change me/ But I would’ve went insane had I remained the same me.† Drake bravely takes deep introspective glances into his personality, diving into his flaws with no fear. He illustrates these trips with rhymes like â€Å"I heard they just moved my grandmother to a nursing home/ And I be acting like I don’t know how to work a phone.† Both lines mentioned above come from what is quite possibly the album’s best song, â€Å"The Resistance.† Drake spills his thoughts and feelings of regret over a slow, mellow beat, creating a masterpiece of self-exploration. Overall, Thank Me Later is a superior album with something for everyone. Whether you’ve been following Drake since Degrassi or you didn’t know Canada had any rappers, you’ll like at least one of the 14 songs featured on this more-than-solid debut. Final Score- 8.5 out of 10

Multiple Personality Disorder Essays (1620 words) -

Multiple Personality Disorder The most famous dissociative disorder is Multiple Personality Disorder, also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). It is estimated that one in one hundred people may suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder and other Dissociative Disorders. With correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment, people have the potential for complete recovery. Multiple Personality Disorder is a condition in which a person has more than one identity, each of which speaks, acts and writes in a very different way. Each personality seems to have its own memories, wishes, and (often conflicting) impulses The symptoms of an individual with Multiple Personality Disorder are 1.) lack of appropriate emotional response 2.) memory loss, lost time, not knowing what they have said or done 3.) feeling dream like 5.) experiencing dissociation which might include dizziness, headaches, numbness in body, spontaneous trance states 6.) not remembering childhood or major life events 7.) recurrent depression 8.) anxiety, panic, and phobias 9.) self destructive thoughts and behavior 10.) substance abuse 11.) eating disorders 12.) sexual dysfunction, including addictions and avoidance 13.) flashbacks, intrusive thoughts and images of trauma 14.) low self esteem, and feeling damaged and/or worthless 15.) shame 16.) somatic pain syndromes 17.) sleep disturbances: nightmares, insomnia, and sleepwalking and 18.) alternative states of consciousness or personalities. Many people displaying MPD have experienced events they would like to forget or avoid. The causation of Multiple Personality Disorder is when an individual has suffered severe, horrific, traumatic, unavoidable, persistent physical or sexual abuse in childhood. Also many people displaying MPD appeared to be skilled at self- hypnosis through which their ?psyche? comes forward as a coping mechanism, to protect them from the pain ( they create a self- induced hypnotic like trance) which allows the individual to escape psychologically. Most people suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder found that they could escape the trauma of abuse at least temporarily by creating ? new personalities? to deal with the stress. ( Braun, B. (1988). The BASK model of dissociation. DISSOCIATION, 1, 4-23. American Psychiatric Association (1994) Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. ( 4th ed) The separate personalities known as ?alters?, are usually unknown to the host personality, which operates the body most of the time. Alters can take many forms, but few types are common. Some typical manifestations include a depressed or hurt child, an internal caretaker, a strong angry protector, and an envious protector who is angry with the host. Although these represent the most common alter personality types, the reported list of variations is fairly long and includes perpetrator alters, avenger alters, opposite sex alters, different race, and even non- human alters. Most of the writings dealing with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder reports that individuals with the illness flow in and out of the various personalities as the environment changes, usually unaware of what is taking place. (Putnam, F.W. (1989). Diagnosis and treatment of multiple personality disorder. New York: Guilford Press. There are many theories which attempt to explain DID, but the central component in all of them appears to be that the disorde occurs as a protective reaction to severe childhood trauma. Essentially, the self appears to dissociate, or ?split? into seperate and distinct personalities in an effort to repress the pain and terror of some tramatic event. The trauma is often sexual in nature. There is one such theory that implies that the blocked pain, terror, and awareness create compartments in the mind, which hold the unprocessed feelings. When these compartments ? leak? says the theory, the person has flashbacks, panic attacks, and nightmares. Individuals stricken with DID may experience the onslaught of the disturbance suddenly or gradually, and the symptoms may become worse over a long period of time. Recent studies indicate that the age of onset is nearly always childhood, and that it is much more common among women then men; as much as three to nine times more. Those who warn that DID/MPD is alarmingly common mental illness and cite numerous studies and a long list of statistics in support of its legitimacy. For example: in a 1990 study which appeared in The Journal of Occupational Therapy, J.F. Higdon stated, ? The past two decades have seen a marked increase in the diagnosing of this disorder, and we are seeing a significant

Storytelling Improv Games to Improve Actor Skills

Storytelling Improv Games to Improve Actor Skills Most theater games are improv-based. Theyre intended to give actors an opportunity to expand and stretch their skills in a low-risk, no-stress, collegial situation. At the end of a session, however, actors will have improved their ability to imagine themselves in new situations and respond appropriately. Some improvisational exercises focus on a performers ability tell stories off-the-cuff. These activities are often stationary theater games, meaning the actors are not required to move about very much. With this in mind, a   story-telling improv game might not be as entertaining as other more physically dynamic games but is  still an excellent way to sharpen ones imagination. Here are a few easy-to-perform story-telling improv games, each one ideal for a class activity or a warm-up exercise at rehearsal: Story-story Known by many other names, Story-story is a circle game for all ages. Many grade school teachers use this as an in-class activity, but it can be just as fun for adult performers. The group of performers sits or stands in a circle. A moderator stands in the middle and provides a setting for the story. She then points to a person in the circle and he begins telling a story. After the first storyteller has described the beginning of the story, the moderator points to another person. The story continues on; the new person picks up from the last word and tries to continue the narrative. Every performer should get several turns to add to the story. Usually the moderator suggests when the story comes to a conclusion; however, more advanced performers will be able to conclude their story on their own. Best/Worst In this improv activity, one person creates an instant monologue, telling a story about an experience (either based upon real-life or based upon pure imagination). The person begins the story in a positive way, focusing on terrific events and circumstances. Then, someone rings a bell. Once the bell sound, the storyteller continues the story, but now only negative things occur in the plot. Each time the bell ring, the storyteller shifts the narrative back and forth, from the best events to the worst events. As the story progresses, the bell should ring more quickly. (Make that storyteller work for it!) Nouns From a Hat There are many improv games which involve slips of papers with random words, phrases or quotes written on them. Usually, these phrases have been invented by audience members. Nouns from a Hat is one of these types of games. Audience members (or the moderators) write nouns on a slip of paper. Proper nouns are acceptable. In fact, the stranger the noun, the more entertaining this improv will be. Once all of the nouns have been collected into a hat (or some other container), a scene begins between two improv performers. About every thirty seconds or so, as they establish their storyline, the performers will reach a point in their dialogue when they are about to say an important noun. Thats when they reach into the hat and grab a noun. The word is then incorporated into the scene, and the results can be wonderfully silly. For example: BILL: I went to the unemployment office today. They offered me a job as a... (reads noun from the hat) penguin.SALLY: Well, that doesnt sound too promising. Does it pay well?BILL: Two buckets of sardines a week.SALLY: Maybe you could work for my uncle. He owns a... (reads nouns from the hat) footprint.BILL: How can you run a business with a footprint?SALLY: Its a Sasquatch footprint. Oh yeah, its been a tourist attraction for years. Nouns from a Hat can involve more actors, as long as there are enough slips of paper. Or, in the same manner as Best/Worst, it can be delivered as an improvisational monologue.

Othello- Emilia, Desdemona Relationship Essay Example

Othello Othello- Emilia, Desdemona Relationship Essay Othello- Emilia, Desdemona Relationship Essay Essay Topic: Othello Emilia Desdemona Relationship In the play Othello, by William Shakespeare, there are two major feminine figures that attract our attention. One is the wife of the plays tragic hero-Othello; the other is betrothed to one of the greatest villains of all time-Iago. They are part and parcel of what goes on in the play and eventually how the crisis of the play is resolved. These two females of the play can be compared and contrasted in a number of ways. To begin, both Desdemona and Emilia are the wives of men of action. Their husbands are in the Venetian military and not Just ordinary men but men who hold positions nd value. Desdemona is the wife of Othello who is a General in the army with men under his command. Emilias husband is Iago who is the ancient of Othello. Next, the two ladies exhibit a level of ignorance of the plots in play around them. Unknowingly both Desdemona and Emilia play right into lagds master plan of destruction. Desdemona and Emilia are also loyal wives who want to please their husbands. Othello believes that Desdemona is lewd and unchaste; therefore Desdemona wants to appease his worries concerning her loyalty by reassuring him, thus pleasing him. Desdemona affirms: l never did Offend you in my life; never loved Cassio But with such general warranty of heaven As I might love. I never gave him token. She is veracious in saying that she has not cheated on Othello with Cassio, therefore proving to him that she is loyal. Similarly, Emilia is Just as loyal to Iago as Desdemona is to Othello. When Emilia finds Desdemonas handkerchief she remembers that her husband had asked her to give it to him. l am glad I have found this napkin My wayward husband hath a hundred times Wooed me to steal it I nothing, but to please his fantasy. For that reason, instead of giving it back to her mistress right away, Emilia gave it to Iago with the goal in mind of pleasing him. Emilias actions thus reinforce her loyalty to Iago. Emilia and Desdemona do differ in perspective. The major contrast of the two womens attitude towards men and marriage come is highlighted when they discuss adultery. In this respect, we can see Emilia as a modern woman, a feminist before her time. Desdemona can be perceived as being old fashioned and idealistic who is votary at the shrine of love. Emilias opinion about men is expressed in the following lines: They are all but stomachs, and we all but food; They eat us hungrily, and when they are full, They belch us. Emilia and Desdemonas view on faithless wives differ as well. To Desdemona, unchaste is unthinkable. But Emilia knows there are faithless wives and she feels that she can explain why some wives fail in chastity. Emilia expresses her belief in equality. Her worldliness becomes evident as she says she may be willing to transgress the bounds of virtue, if the whole world is offered as a price. Her ultimate conclusion on such contradictory ideals is that the bad behavior of a woman is only a eflection of her husbands behavior. The difference in their use of language indicates the disparities between the womens characters. Desdemonas speech is gentle, courteous and refined. When Othello abuses her faithlessness, she is unable to argue or expostulate with him. Even in the face of death, Desdemonas language remains spiritual: No, by my life and soul! Emilia has a rough and ready tongue. She uses her language to defy the fear of death: l care not for thy sword; As Emilias anger raises her language becomes direct and coarse: He called her a whore; Emilia eels no embarrassment in pronouncing the word Whore which Desdemona shrinks from uttering. The view of both women to their husbands takes different paths at the end of the play. Desdemona continues to love her husband even though he has fatally smothered her. Desdemona acts saintly blaming her death on herself: Nobody; I myself; Farewell: She does not alter her love even in the face of irrational passion. In this way, Desdemona exemplifies romantic love. Emilia was loyal and devoted to her husband. At the shocking discovery of the truth, Emilias view of her husband is shattered. Her realisation is made worse because of the part she took in it. She is a symbol of Justice as she puts her mistresss good name before her own. Emilia is heroic in the face of death as she passes Judgment on her husband: may his pernicious soul/ Rot half a grain a day! The greatest similarity between Desdemona and Emilia is that their husbands murdered them both. Their downfall was undoubtedly their love and faith in their husbands and their trust of Iago. Both womens good qualities were used against them and led to their murder; Desdemonas generosity and compassion and Emilias sense of Justice and devotion.

Summary - Case Study Example Mrs. Fairlie's son Hamish benefited from this program and now goes to regular school. Miss Taylor's chosen charity was Make a Difference, a small charity that supports children and their families in Sydney suffering from financial crisis. These Sydney families would be directly supported by the funds raised here. Both ladies were awarded $15000 each to visit their charities of choice, as well as a trip to Hawaii. APEC summits usually draw their share of protesters to each meet, and the businesses of the CBD at Sydney are being asked to beef up security in anticipation of untoward events or damages to property by protesters. According to the NSW Business chamber's chief executive, Kevin MacDonald, the challenge for the businesses would be to cope with upsets in everyday business due to security and transport measures taken by the government as well as taking on additional individual security measures. The reinforced security measures could include simple things like locking doors, limiting access to vital areas and increasing the amount of security at the shop fronts. Businesses with shop fronts would be particularly vulnerable, and both Australian as well as international businesses could be targeted. These conclusions are based on previous experiences of demonstrations by protesters at APEC summits. All businesses are therefore taking the threat of possible damage to property very seriously . The weekend would also be marked by a food and wine festival, a special charity cricket day, and a gala dinner. ---------------------------------------- The APEC summit would end with a short, five-minute fireworks display. This is supposed to mark the end of the summit, and would complement the appearance of the APEC logo that would be shining on the Sydney Harbour Bridge from September 2 to 9. The fireworks would be sent off from various tall ships and yachts, but not from the Sydney Bridge itself, and the entire display would be called "River of Fire". The show would be exclusive to the visiting dignitaries who would be attending a 45-minute performance featuring young Australian artists inside the nearby Sydney Opera House. Since the fireworks display would be very short, and would be held inside the area under APEC security restrictions, APEC spokeswoman Anne Fulwood felt that the general public would enjoy it better on their television sets. This would also prevent any disruptions in the area under the APEC strict security lock-down. ----------------------------- A new music, art and media festival called Up! would be presented by the Frontier Touring Company this spring.
